Mary Nightingale has anchored the ITV Evening News since 2001, becoming its sole presenter from January 2017 onward. Over three decades, she has moved from financial broadcasting in Tokyo and London to one of the most recognisable seats in British television news, building a reputation for calm, unflashy delivery through elections, royal events, and national emergencies.

Early Life and Education

Mary Louise Nightingale was born on 26 May 1963 in Scarborough, North Yorkshire, the third of four daughters. Her family relocated to Marlow, Buckinghamshire when she was four, and later to Dartmouth, Devon, ten years after that. She was privately educated at Danesfield School in Medmenham, St Margaret’s School in Exeter, and King Edward VI School in Totnes, before earning a BA in English from Bedford College, University of London — an institution later merged into Royal Holloway, University of London.

Starting in Financial Journalism

Nightingale’s first steps in broadcasting were far from the evening news desk. She began as a presenter and writer on World Business Satellite for TV Tokyo, then moved to BBC World’s World Business Report, covering corporate and economic news for an international audience. In 1994, she presented an early-morning financial programme for Reuters Financial Television — a grounding in precision, market literacy, and fast-turnaround reporting that would carry through into her later news career.

Building a Broadcasting Career

Through the 1990s, Nightingale took on a wide range of presenting roles that went well beyond hard news:

  • Co-presented ITV’s coverage of the 1991 Rugby World Cup in Britain, France, and Ireland, and returned to present highlights from the 1995 tournament in South Africa
  • Became the first presenter of After 5, London News Network’s early-evening show, in May 1994
  • Presented BBC Two’s ski-jumping and alpine-racing programme Ski Sunday in 1996
  • Co-presented London Tonight with Alastair Stewart and anchored the lunchtime bulletin London Today until April 1999
  • Co-presented Carlton Country, a factual series on rural life, and fronted the BBC One Holiday programme
  • Anchored ITV’s flagship holiday programme Wish You Were Here…? from 1999 to 2001, alongside The Really Good Food Show

This stretch of her career shows a presenter comfortable moving between hard financial news, sport, travel, and lifestyle formats — versatility that became less visible once she settled into the anchor’s chair, but which shaped how she approached studio work under pressure.

The ITV Evening News Era

Nightingale joined the ITV Evening News in 2001, leaving her position on London Tonight behind. That same year, she was part of the ITN team covering the general election, one of her first major assignments in national news. She also filled in occasionally on the ITV Lunchtime News and weekend bulletins, and served as a relief presenter on ITV News at Ten before the programme’s 2015 restructure.

In December 2016, ITV announced she would become the Evening News’s sole presenter starting the following January — a departure from the dual-anchor format that had defined the bulletin for years, and a signal of the trust ITV placed in her as a standalone authority on screen.

Her broader ITV credits over this period have included:

  • Hosting the ITV daytime cookery series Britain’s Best Dish from April 2011, taking over from Mark Nicholas
  • Presenting the ITV special William & Kate: The South Seas Tour in September 2012
  • Fronting Holidays Undercover in 2006
  • Presenting coverage including The Girl Who Would Be Queen and Diana – A Service of Thanksgiving in 2007

Some of her most notable work has come through difficult, high-profile interviews rather than studio presenting. She sat down with Mark Prince twenty years after his 15-year-old son Kiyan was fatally stabbed while trying to break up a fight outside his school, and interviewed Denise Fergus — mother of murdered toddler James Bulger — on why Brianna Ghey’s mother deserves to know who killed her child. These conversations reflect a recurring thread in Nightingale’s later career: sitting with people well after the news cycle has moved on, when the story requires patience rather than urgency.

Recognition

Nightingale won the TRIC (Television and Radio Industries Club) Award for Newscaster of the Year in both 2002 and 2004, recognising her early impact in the Evening News chair. She also appeared as a contestant on Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? alongside broadcaster Des Lynam, where the pair won £64,000, which they split between their chosen charities.

Charity Work

Away from the newsroom, Nightingale has taken on long-running patron roles with several charities. She is listed among the patrons and trustees of the Rainbow Trust Children’s Charity, which provides emotional and practical support to families of seriously ill children. She has also been a patron of The Willow Foundation — founded by former Arsenal goalkeeper Bob Wilson and his wife Megs in memory of their daughter Anna, who died of cancer aged 31 — for over a decade, supporting the charity’s work organising “Special Days” for seriously ill young adults aged 16 to 40. Reporting on her own website also links her to the Mariposa Trust, which supports families affected by pregnancy and infant loss, and to Action for Children, a long-established charity working with vulnerable children and young people across the UK.

Personal Life

Nightingale married television producer Paul Fenwick, formerly Human Resources director at Trailfinders, in April 2000 in New York City. Beyond the marriage itself, she has kept most details of her family life out of the public record, giving few interviews that touch on her private life in any depth.

What’s Not Confirmed

A number of claims about Nightingale circulate on gossip and content-aggregator sites that aren’t backed by primary sources — including her children’s names, an OBE, a 2020 vocal surgery, and various figures for her net worth. None of these appear in Wikipedia, IMDb, ITV’s own profile of her, or the charity pages that list her patronages, so they’ve been left out of this profile rather than repeated as fact.
